Every year, when the ghats of Kolkata, Patna and Ranchi fill with devotees standing waist-deep in water at dusk, I, Anjan Shastri, am reminded that no other festival asks a person to face the Sun so directly. Chhath Puja astrology begins with this idea: it is not just a ritual of lamps, fruits and offerings. It is a quiet conversation between a human being and the source of all life.
This year, the main day of Chhath Puja falls on 15 November, and I get many questions at this time. Why the Sun? Why fasting without even water? What does Surya Dev actually have to do with my health, my job and my standing in society? In this blog, I look at Chhath Puja astrology through the lens of Vedic Astrology and explain how a strong Sun shapes the three things people care about most.
Chhath Puja astrology rests on one of the oldest forms of worship in our tradition: Sun worship. The Rigveda is full of hymns to Surya, and the Aditya Hridaya Stotra, taught to Lord Rama before his battle with Ravana, is still recited for courage and clarity. Tradition links Chhath to Kunti, Draupadi and Sita, and to Karna, the son of Surya himself. Chhath adds Chhathi Maiya, honoured on the sixth day of Kartik Shukla, as the protector of children and families. The rite is simple but demanding: a four-day vow of purity, fasting, and offering arghya to the setting and the rising Sun.

In Vedic Astrology, the Sun is the Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul. When I open a Kundli, the Sun tells me about your vitality, confidence, relationship with your father, and the authority you carry. The Sun is exalted in Aries, comfortable in its own sign Leo, and weak in Libra. Its house position decides where in life your light shines most brightly.
The Sun governs the heart, bones, eyesight, and the body’s overall immunity and energy. People with a well-placed Sun usually recover quickly, wake up early and carry a natural stamina. When the Sun is afflicted by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, I often see tiredness, low immunity, eye strain, or a heart that works under constant pressure. That is why our ancestors fasted and stood in sunlight at the hours when the rays are gentlest.
Surya is the natural karaka of government service, leadership, administration, medicine and politics. A strong Sun, especially in the 10th, 1st or 11th house, often gives a person the ability to lead, take responsibility and rise steadily. A weak Sun can show up as repeated obstacles in promotions, difficulty with seniors, or the feeling that your hard work is never noticed.
Respect cannot be demanded. It is earned, and in a Kundli it is largely read from the Sun. A well-supported Sun gives dignity, a clear voice and a good name in society. When it is troubled, people may struggle with ego clashes, or with being overlooked despite real merit. Both extremes need balance, and Surya worship teaches exactly that: shine, but serve.
Look for a weak Sun in Libra, a Sun in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or a Sun conjunct Saturn or Rahu. Common signs are low confidence, a strained relationship with father or authority figures, frequent eye or heart discomfort, and a career that moves slower than your abilities deserve. These are only indications. Results depend on your complete chart, which is why I always say that your own Kundli must be checked before any remedy is chosen.
Few festivals combine discipline, devotion and sunlight the way Chhath does. Fasting purifies the body, standing in water at sunrise and sunset steadies the mind, and arghya connects you to Surya in the most direct way possible. From the viewpoint of Chhath Puja astrology, these four days are a rare window when sincere effort and cosmic energy align.

• Offer arghya of water in a copper vessel at sunrise, facing east, with a calm mind and the Surya mantra.
• Recite the Aditya Hridaya Stotra or the Gayatri Mantra, especially on Sundays.
• Practise Surya Namaskar in the morning light for health and discipline.
• Donate wheat, jaggery or red cloth on Sundays, and respect your father and elders.
• Do not wear a Ruby without a Kundli check. A gemstone can harm if the Sun is not truly beneficial for you.
Q. Is Chhath Puja only for those who observe the full fast?
A. No. The vrati observes the full rite, but family members can join in prayer, help with preparations and offer arghya in their own way.
Q. Can Chhath Puja improve my career?
A. It can support confidence, discipline and clarity, which help your career. Actual results depend on your Kundli and your effort.
Q. Which house placement gives the Sun the most strength?
A. The Sun does well in the 1st, 10th and 11th houses, and in Aries or Leo, but the whole chart must be read together.
Q. Should everyone wear a Ruby for a strong Sun?
A. No. A Ruby suits only some charts. Please consult an astrologer before wearing any gemstone.
Q. Can women and elders offer arghya at home?
A. Yes. If you cannot reach a ghat, you can offer arghya from a clean, open space with a copper vessel and a sincere heart.
In Chhath Puja astrology, Surya Dev does not ask for grand gestures. He asks for punctuality, honesty and gratitude, and in return he gives health, direction and a name that people respect. This Chhath, as you stand before the rising Sun, remember that the light you are offering arghya to is the same light that lives in your own chart. If you wish to know how strong your Sun is and what is best for you, I would be glad to guide you.
If you want to understand the position of the Sun in your own Kundli and what it means for your health, career and reputation, I am here to guide you personally. Every chart is different, so the right remedy for you may not be the right one for someone else. Reach out through any of the options below and let us find the path that suits you best.
