Have you ever felt like you're doing everything right, yet something invisible keeps holding you back? A promotion that never quite arrives. A property deal that collapses at the last moment. A marriage proposal that keeps getting delayed. Recurring family arguments that seem to have no real cause.
In thirty years of consultation practice, I, Anjan Shastri, have met hundreds of people carrying exactly this feeling. Often, the answer lies not in this life, but in the debts and blessings passed down from the generations before them.
This is where Pitru Paksha astrology becomes important. Pitru Paksha is a sixteen-day lunar period dedicated to honoring our ancestors, and in 2026 it falls from September 26 to October 10. Even if you have never heard the term "Pitru Dosh," this fortnight matters for every family, because our ancestors' unfulfilled wishes and blessings continue to shape our present.
Shraddha (ancestral offerings) and Tarpan (water offerings to departed souls) trace back to the Vedic period, when it was believed the deceased continue to depend on the good karma and offerings of their descendants. Pitru Paksha begins on Bhadrapada Purnima (full moon) and ends on Ashwin Amavasya (new moon), because Vedic cosmology considers the waning lunar fortnight the most receptive time for the pitru - our ancestral souls - to accept offerings. This is why the exact dates shift slightly each year, though the underlying logic never changes.
In Vedic Astrology, our connection to ancestors is written directly into the birth chart. The Sun represents the father and paternal lineage, the Moon reflects the mother's line, and the 9th house of the kundli governs fortune, dharma, and ancestral blessings as a whole.
When these placements are afflicted - by malefic conjunctions, debilitation, or harsh aspects - it often points to Pitru Dosh, an imbalance caused by unresolved ancestral energy. Pitru Paksha is the astrologically ordained window to correct it.
Over the years, I have noticed recurring patterns. A few signs of weak pitru blessings include:
● Frequent, unexplained delays in marriage, career, or property matters
● Chronic health issues doctors cannot fully explain
● Recurring family disputes over ancestral property
● A persistent feeling of being "stuck" despite hard work
● Difficulty conceiving, or repeated obstacles in a child's growth
By contrast, strong ancestral blessings usually show up as a well-placed 9th house and a life supported by unseen good fortune - opportunities arriving on time, elders' blessings translating into real progress, and a sense of protection during difficult phases.
Tarpan rituals are the heart of Pitru Paksha. If your family knows the exact tithi (lunar date) of an ancestor's passing, the offering should ideally match that tithi within the fortnight - if an ancestor passed on Panchami tithi, perform Tarpan on the Panchami falling during Pitru Paksha.
A simple guide:
1. Bathe before sunrise and wear clean, light-coloured clothing
2. Face south, the direction associated with the ancestral realm
3. Offer water mixed with black sesame seeds (til) and kusha grass, using both hands
4. Recite the names and gotra of your ancestors, up to three generations
5. Conclude with a prayer for their blessings and forgiveness for any lapses
If the exact date is unknown, Tarpan on Sarvapitri Amavasya, the final day, is considered equally effective for all ancestors.
Alongside Tarpan, a few time-tested Pitru Dosh remedies I recommend during this period:
● Donate food, clothes, or money to the needy, ideally on the matching tithi
● Feed crows, cows, and dogs daily - considered messengers of the pitrus
● Chant the Pitru Gayatri Mantra, or simply "Om Pitru Devaya Namah," each morning
● Light a mustard oil lamp facing south on Amavasya evening
● Avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and new auspicious ceremonies, as a mark of respect
Consistency matters far more than scale.

This is what surprises people most. I often see a direct link between an afflicted 9th house or Sun-Moon axis and specific struggles:
● Career: Stagnation despite talent, missed promotions, unstable partnerships
● Property: Legal disputes over ancestral land, delays in registration
● Children: Difficulty conceiving, behavioural struggles, delayed milestones
I recall a family with years of unexplained losses in their ancestral business. Their kundli showed a clearly afflicted 9th house; once they began sincere Tarpan and small donations each Pitru Paksha, they reported a gradual, steady turnaround over the following years.
Traditional belief holds certain activities should be postponed during this fortnight:
● Starting new ventures or major projects
● Buying property, vehicles, or other high-value assets
● Weddings, engagements, and other joyous ceremonies
● Housewarming (Griha Pravesh) or moving into a new home
● Purchasing gold for celebratory purposes
These are customary observances, not rigid rules - but many families find honoring them brings peace during the period.
The final day of Pitru Paksha, Mahalaya Amavasya, falls on October 10, 2026, and is considered the most powerful day of the fortnight. On this day the pitrus are believed to return to their realm, making it the last and strongest opportunity to offer Tarpan, prayers, and donations for all ancestors, known or unknown.
Even those who missed the earlier days are encouraged to make an effort on this one, as its spiritual weight is considered equal to observing the full fortnight.

You don't need an elaborate ceremony to begin honoring your ancestors. Small, sincere gestures during these sixteen days can help:
● Light a lamp each evening and remember your grandparents and elders
● Offer water to a peepal or banyan tree, sacred to ancestral spirits
● Keep your home and mind calm - avoid unnecessary family conflict
● Set aside a small amount for charity in your ancestors' name
● If unsure of rituals or tithis, a brief consultation can help you understand your kundli -
Q1. What if we don't know our ancestor's exact death date?
This is common. Tarpan on Sarvapitri Amavasya, the last day of Pitru Paksha, is considered fully effective for all ancestors, regardless of tithi.
Q2. Can these rituals be performed outside India?
Yes. The ritual is about intention and sincerity, not geography. Facing south with clean water and your ancestors' names carries equal value anywhere.
Q3. Is Pitru Dosh the same as bad luck?
Not exactly. It's a specific astrological imbalance tied to ancestral energy, while general misfortune can arise from other planetary factors. A kundli reading confirms whether it's truly present.
Q4. Can women perform Tarpan and other rituals?
Yes, especially without eligible male descendants, or out of personal devotion. Sincerity matters far more than gender here.
Q5. Do I need to fast during Pitru Paksha?
Not necessarily. Avoiding non-vegetarian food and alcohol out of respect is more common than strict fasting, usually reserved for the person performing Tarpan.
Pitru Paksha is not a period to fear, but one to remember. Our ancestors don't ask for grand gestures - only sincerity, memory, and a small share of our time. When we honor that connection, the blocks we could never quite explain often begin, gently, to lift.
This fortnight, pause, light a lamp, offer a little water, and remember those who came before you. It costs very little, and in my experience, it gives back far more than we expect.
